In a world of male dominance, she was encouraged by St Aidan to stay here in the North of England, instead of becoming a nun in France. He helped her create small villages where she helped the community and these experiences trained her for the huge task of being an Abbess - in charge of a large, mixed Abbey, in Whitby.
